2014: A Review

Filed in:

If I could sum up 2014 in one word it would have to be “bold.” I’m not one for change- it freaks me out and makes me more anxious than I already am…but that’s what 2014 was filled with. From my business, to my personal life- 2014 has called on my nonstop to be bold and put myself out of my comfort zone.

On the business side of 2014, I branched out and made connections with some of the most talented, caring, amazing photographers and artists. I still can’t believe that the friendships are mutual (and I’m not just some crazy blog stalker). I took on more full day wedding coverage weddings, changed my workflow, invested a whole lot of money in my business, and reached out to countless wedding professionals to gain both friendships and work relationships. I was always so scared to reach out to other wedding professionals and designers in fear that they’d give me a big ol’ hecccckkkk no. But magically, I was able to work with DREAM wedding planners and professionals that made me find a new love for photography.

On the everyday life side of things, there were a lot of bold changes. I moved back home and had to transition out of a life that I’d been used to for 5 years. Thankfully, despite my incredible fear of flying, travel has opened up a part of my heart that I didn’t even realize could happen. Making friends in beautiful cities, shooting century old buildings, site seeing, and merging my business to focus on international weddings and elopements has made me one happy girl.

Before 2014, I’d been out of the country once. And before 2013, I didn’t even have a passport. This year, I’ve spent a total of 10 weeks in Europe, and I’m literally counting down the days until my next trip over (I have an app on my phone that I look, like, every other day). I’ve flown on over 25 flights (and taken approximately 50 xanax pills…), slept on around 10 trains, taken countless metro/subway/u-bahn rides and I can say wholeheartedly that this has been the most difficult, yet amazing year and I can’t wait to see what 2015 has to offer.

Travel-wise, I’ll be all around the Pacific a good amount- in January, I will be traveling up the California Coast with my amazing friend Natalie, then flying out to Hawaii and New Zealand for a 3 week photo adventure. In April, I will be heading with my fav travel best sistaaafriend, Kasey, to explore Thailand. Mix in a few trips to Europe that still need to be nailed down and I couldn’t be more excited.

Last year, I made a long specific list of my personal and business goals for 2014. This year, I’m keeping things simple:

Goal 1: Be a Better Business Owner

Responding to emails while traveling, having a set editing work week, and consistent blogging. Find a better accounting system and meet with more professionals to outsource the things I hate (aka accounting).

Goal 2: Stay Heathly

Take a break from my computer and take a yoga class every week, clear my mind, and walk more. Every Europe trip, I lose weight and have more energy, even while eating more food than I do at home. How?! Because I’m laughing, happy, and not sitting in front of a computer all day staring at Photo Mechanic, Lightroom, Blogstomp, and social media.

Goal 3: Fall in Love with More Cities

Continuing to travel, meeting new couples, shooting in new places, and doing it all with both my personal and business life in mind.

This is a long, boring post, I’m sure! But sometimes it’s nice to put out a little personal stuff in between all the pretty couples and weddings. I hope everyone has an amazing start to 2015- can’t wait for a new year to meet new friends, laugh a lot with old ones, have fun, and be bold.

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” –Goethe
